Why Most “AI Consultants” Are Just Reselling ChatGPT

Por que a maioria dos “consultores de IA” só está revendendo ChatGPT

AI has become a new line item in every executive conversation. But in many cases, what gets sold as “strategy” is little more than a ChatGPT login, a few prompts, and a slide deck.

That creates a problem. Companies pay for transformation, then get a demo of a general-purpose tool they could have tested on their own in 20 minutes.

What Most AI Consultants Actually Sell

Many consultants focus on the easiest thing to package: access to a model and a list of prompt ideas. That is not a solution. It is a starting point.

If the work stops at writing prompts, the business still has to figure out:

Real AI Work Is Operational

Useful AI projects usually sit inside a workflow. They help teams move faster, reduce manual effort, or improve consistency. The value comes from design, not novelty.

Good examples include

In each case, the model is only one part of the system. The rest includes data inputs, rules, exceptions, and human review.

How to Spot the Difference

Ask direct questions. Real practitioners can answer them clearly. Vendors who only resell ChatGPT usually cannot.

  1. What business process will this improve?
  2. What system does it need to connect to?
  3. Where will it fail, and who handles the edge cases?
  4. How will we measure time saved, cost avoided, or risk reduced?

If the answer stays at the “prompting” level, you are not buying automation. You are buying experimentation.

What Executives Should Look For Instead

Look for people who understand operations, not just language models. The best AI partners think in terms of workflow, controls, and adoption. They know that a tool only matters if the team keeps using it.

Start with one process that costs time, creates bottlenecks, or produces repetitive work. Then map the existing steps, identify where AI can help, and define the control points before anything goes live.

AI delivers value when it changes how work moves through the business, not when it simply sounds intelligent.

That is the real test. If the consultant can only sell you ChatGPT, they are not solving a business problem. They are reselling software you can already access.
